Performing proper keyword research is the first step in the process of driving targeted traffic to your website- and it is the most important. Skipping this step leaves your website needing to find other ways of getting visitors than via the search engines. The best way to accomplish this is to start out by creating detailed keyword research reports. I will explain what they are and how to create them.

What are Keyword Research Reports?

Simply put, they are a guide that will give you a breakdown of what keywords and phrases you should target on your websites, articles, or blogs. Targeting the right key-phrases in the content, headings, and title tags is crucial towards building a high-volume traffic website. A keyword research report will give you a detailed listing of the many short and long tail phrases that would be beneficial to target. It will also allow you to see how many people are searching for those terms and what the level of competition for them is.

How to create Keyword Research Reports:

1. Using the free Google AdWords Keyword Tool, start by typing in a few short keywords related to your type of business. (note: there are paid tools you can use, but this is a good place to start with no cost)
2. Select "Advanced Options", "Filter Competition- Low". The reason we are doing this is because this will give you a breakdown of keywords that are not as competitive and, therefore, more realistic for getting ranked high in the Google search results for those terms.
3. Go through the entire list of suggestions related to your main keyword and find as many as you can that are the best "buying phrases" you could use on your website, blog, or article. What is a "buying phrase"? It is a searched phrase that is clearly entered by someone looking to buy something instead of just looking for some free advice or information.
4. Input your list of best key-phrases into a Spreadsheet. I use Spreadsheets because they are easy to sort and find your information. You can always use a Word Processor instead.
5. For headings on your spreadsheet, I would select "Phrase", "Global Monthly Searches" (if you are selling to a Worldwide clientele), "Local Monthly Searches" (if you only sell in the US), and "Competition" (Low, Medium, or High).
6. Using a Word Processor, write out your page Title Tags. Make sure to incorporate 1-2 of your main keywords that you will be using on that page. It is important to remember that the search engine "robots" use the page Title Tags to learn about what that page is about. Make sure the page is relevant to them or you will confuse the search engines and hurt your ranking. Also remember that this is the first thing your human audience views when they locate the list of websites after inputting their search term. So make it appealing to the "robots" and potential buyers. Most SEO experts will agree that proper Title Tag creation is one of the most important elements of search engine optimization.

One last thing- realize that keyword research requires a time investment. If you don't have the time or the understanding of how to do it- hire someone. This is a very important step in optimizing your website and can quite literally make or break the success or failure of it.
