Why Do Keyword Research?

As an Internet marketer you are always looking for ways to capture targeted traffic and increase your sales or sign-ups. If you target the wrong keywords, all your marketing efforts are for nothing. Target the right phrases and your efforts will be greatly rewarded.

Your Internet business should be based on the keywords that are relevant to your specific niche. The first action you should take is to make a list of possible phrases your potential customer or client would enter when using a search engine (Google, Search.Yahoo, Bing, etc.).

Manual Keyword Research

After compiling your list of possible search terms, you will want to see exactly how many people are searching for that phrase, and what level of competition you have for it. Using a free tool such as Google External is very helpful in accomplishing this research.

To find your best keywords you will want to find phrases that have a competition level below 20,000, with as many searches as possible - above 999 would be ideal. Any above 20,000 in competition and it will be much harder to achieve a decent ranking to get targeted traffic to your site.

After you have picked your top 10 or 20 phrases you can use Google Insight to check on the popularity of each phrase and compare them one to another. You can also see other related phrases that are gaining in popularity; you might want to add a few of these to your list.

I know it sounds like a lot of work (and it is), but you need to keep digging until you find the best money keywords for your specific niche. One of my mentors stated that you should spend 75% of your time on keyword research and 25% of your time on content. It comes down to - No Traffic, No Sale.

If you would like to speed up this research process you can subscribe to a keyword generator tool. Besides the fact that an automated tool can research and find your relevant phrases much faster than you can, they can also conduct their search using multiple search engines at the same time.

A paid tool will usually give you much more in depth information concerning your phrase. You will see information such as cost per click, search volume, estimated clicks per day, local searches, level of competition, cost per day, and so on.
