Finding a keyword with the AdWords suggestion tool is only half the story though. Ok, so you have now found a keyword with reasonable amount of searches but with low enough results for you to compete with.

Now you want to know how much authority the existing sites on Page 1 of Google have for the keyword you are targeting.

So enter your keyword again into Google (without " ") and look at the results. There are a number of additional factors that you now need to think about, to decide whether the keyword you have found with the Google keyword tool, is actually still worth targeting.

For each of the sites given on the page 1 results for your keyword you want to know the domain age, the page rank of the site, how many backlinks it has and whether it has backlinks from educational or government sites. You will need to research all of these factors, plus how well each site is optimised for that keyword on the page itself.

As you can easily imagine, this will all take up a lot of time.

Is there anything more effective than the AdWords suggestion tool?

Don't get me wrong, the Google keyword tool does work and will give you decent keywords to target if you follow the above instructions.

However, if you want to drastically reduce the amount of time that you take for keyword research, then I would seriously consider using some keyword research software, instead of using Google's AdWords Suggestion Tool.
