Search Engine Optimization. No doubt not a lot of people know what that phase means. If you have heard the term, maybe you haven't given much thought to how it affects finding information on the Internet. Web site developers live and die with Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Understanding how search engines categorize a web site can be the difference between successful Internet marketing and spending a lot of money for not much return. The small or network marketing business owner can benefit from a basic knowledge of SEO.

By now we all should understand that Internet marketing strategies provide the best return for our time and money. A web site or blog is the cornerstone of any Internet marketing plan. This is where you will provide information for your customers. The process of optimizing your site so that it shows up in the search engine results in the goal of SEO. There are many techniques you can use to enhance your site, but all start with what we call keywords. The process of choosing the appropriate key words for your web site content or blog post is critical.

When looking for information on the Internet, the first step is to access a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing. Then type a question or subject into the search box. The words you use to describe your question, are the keywords that will allow your website or blog show up in the search results. When writing content, you must use keywords that allow the search engines to categorize your web site or blog into your particular niche. With a bit of work, you can come up with a set of keywords that optimizes your chances to show up in these results.

• Keyword Research: Let's say that you are composing a post for your blog. Whatever the subject is, think about the words or phases you would type into a search engine to access information on that subject. Write down a list of 10-20. Then you will want to start a keyword analysis. There are many free web sites where you can type in your list of keywords to see how relevant they will be for your post. This process will take some time, but a keyword rich post will bring tons of traffic to you blog site.

The search engines must somehow decide what you are trying to promote with your web site or blog. It is unrealistic for them to look at and read the millions of sites that exist on the Internet today. Software programs are used to scan web sites and pick out these all-important keywords. There are three levels of software that are used to categorize web sites.

• Spider Software: The spider software will in essence crawl around the web searching web pages in the same way you would through a search engine. What it looks for is text (keywords) and links (URL's). It is not interested in what the site looks like just the content it contains. We can start to see how important our keywords are.

• Index Software: The index software collects all the information that the spider software has searched for and analyzes the data. It looks at the text and tries to figure out what a particular page is about. It also looks at the links to get information on related web sites. After this process, the search engines know pretty well what subject your site or blog is about. It then can place it in the appropriate category.

• Query Software: The query software is what you see when you visit a search engine. All the hard work of the spider and index software shows up in the query. We can type in a search and thousands of results magically appear without ever thinking of where they came from. Pretty amazing.

With this basic knowledge of how search engines work and the importance of keywords, your content has a better chance of showing up in search results. The higher you rank in these results is directly proportional to the amount of traffic to you web site or blog. The time taken to research and study SEO will be time well spent.
