Every SEO guru will tell you that keyword density matters. However, everyone seems to have a different theory about the subject. Some say it's best to keep it below two percent. Others say the higher the keyword density percentage, the better. Who are you to believe? In my opinion, some internet marketers are still behind the times. Here's my take on the keyword density dilemma.
A few years ago I was writing for a company that was a master of Black Hat internet marketing. They had a staff of about twenty-five, writing and posting twenty-four hours a day, flooding the social media with content. For every article set I wrote, I was given a list of about a hundred primary and secondary keywords, with strict instructions to achieve as close to a primary keyword density percentage of six percent as I could, with some secondary ones thrown in for good measure. For a time, I could see that the strategy was working. I saw my articles and blog posts on Page One of Google for a very competitive keyword. Then the ax fell.
Right in the middle of a big campaign, my employer sent out a panic-stricken email. His SEO strategy wasn't working anymore. What was going wrong?
As it turned out, his high keyword density percentage strategy was backfiring on him. The search engines, social media sites and article directories, sick of the flood of spam and junk content, changed their algorithms. Our carefully constructed, keyword rich articles were being filtered out by search engine spiders and the better article directories and blog platforms were rejecting our submissions. Black Hat was dead.
As a writer, I rejoiced at the news. In the scramble to change strategies, not only did I get about 3 months worth of writing work, I was also allowed to write articles I wasn't ashamed of. Asked to keep the keyword density percentage to below 2%, I was able to write truly informative, readable articles again.
Keyword stuffing still has its place. When creating content for a website, I am still asked to include densities of up to 6%, but that is for minor content that's not intended to be widely read. High kw content like this, when strategically placed, helps make up for the lower densities on the homepage and elsewhere, where quality of writing counts the most. Other than that, I've been sticking with a density of below 2%. Everybody is happy. My clients are getting the search engine placements they are targeting, I'm not embarrassed by the quality of articles I'm writing and the article directories are accepting my submissions.
In case you're wondering, my primary keyword in this article is "keyword density." My secondary keyword is "keyword density percentage." I got it by using Wonder Wheel. Let's see how my strategy works.
