What is Keyword Research? It is a process where you do a detailed research on a topic you have chosen to blog about to gather vital information that ultimately determines whether or not the topic is worth blogging about - profitable.
Unfortunately this most important step is greatly ignored by beginners to blogging. This though is not totally their fault. Many are misinformed.
There are so many people providing information on how to build a successful blog, but most don't talk about this step, some that do, don't give it the importance it deserves.
The regular talk is go set up a blog, monetize it and drive traffic to it.
This mis-information has resulted in at least 90% failed blogs.
The so called pros after they have built their blogs the hard way and succeeded they start promoting the notion that it is very easy to make money blogging, throwing different products at beginners.
Anyway, failing to do a proper keyword research before jumping to start a blog is like walking blind-folded with no idea of where you are going, whether or not there is a gutter in front of you and how to get to your destination unharmed.
Some people have walked blind-folded into blogging, only to learn a bitter lesson and start over again. If you are reading this you have a chance to start right.
Plan your Blog Like you would Plan a Traditional Business
No one goes into a traditional business without first gathering the right information to determine whether or not the business will be worthwhile. And just like doing a keyword research, getting all the required information necessary before starting a certain business requires proper research into business.
Here is how the information you require before joining a certain business relates to blogging.
- Why do I want to start a business? (Goal for your blog )
- Okay now that I know why I want to start a business, what services can I render? (Determining topics you can blog about)
- How good am I in this service I want to build my business on? (Passion, knowledge, skill and experience)
- Are people looking for this service? (Monthly keyword searches)
- If yes, how wide is the market? (Is the number of searches large enough to make you money?) (Does the topic have depth to form the overall blog topic?)
- How much can I make from this venture? Is it worth pursuing? (Find out if your topic can be monetized in several ways. A topic you go for should be one you can monetize in at least 3 ways)
- How competitive is the current market for this service? (How many people are presently writing on the topic?). The smaller the competition, the easy it is to win it.
- How do my competitors render this service? Is there something I can offer to customers that would make them prefer to work with me? What are the different avenues my competitors are using to make money from this venture? (Spy on your competitors, Visit some of their blogs and thoroughly read through noting down new ideas).
You might have several services you can render. So you would have to determine which is more profitable, which leads to the following questions:
These are all the questions you would be sure to find answers to before starting a traditional business if you wish to get clients or make money in the business.
You see how keyword research relates well to all those questions? Telling you that blogging has gone far beyond keeping a diary. Now blogging is making some people millions every year. And it is one of the coolest home businesses anyone can start. As it can be started with just $20 (for your domain name and hosting) and be really fun to do if you write about a topic you are passionate about.
How to Gather the Necessary Data you Need to Decide a Blog Topic
There are tools that can be used to gather all the data we have talked about. There are some free ones like the google free keyword research tool but you don't get accurate data. The ones that give you accurate data usually cost some money. But it is an investment that will be worth it. You really don't want to get this wrong!
But if you can't afford to invest on a tool, it is okay to start with the free research tools. At least merely closing your eyes is better than being blind-folded:)
