When starting a new website or blog one of the most important things to do initially is keyword research. Getting keywords with a high monthly global search and low competition will give you a head start when starting out. The Google keyword tool is a fantastic tool for doing keyword research, it is also free which is a bonus if on a budget. To find the free tool just Google it.

When the Google keyword tool page comes up, you have to:

1. Type in word or phrase into the box, below the words "Find keywords", relating to your niche.

2. I then go to the advanced options and go with all locations.

3. A keyword list appears, I usually go with 3000 and above global searches per month.

4. There are 3 match types located on the left column, broad, exact and phrase. I choose exact.

5. I click on the keywords with searches over 3000 global monthly searches, this opens a Google search, I then put the keyword or phrase in quotes. This gives me the competition, which means the number of pages on the internet containing this keyword or phrase, I usually go with 80,000 competing pages and below.

This is not an exact rule, say you find a keyword with 50,000 searches per month and it has 100,000 competing pages, then I would go for it, I use the above numbers as a guide.

On the the free keyword tool you can see competition tab this refers to Google ad campaigns, the more the box is shaded the higher the completion. It refers to the costs being paid for keywords for advertising. This is not to be confused with page competition and the quotes process.

I would use the free keyword tool on a daily basis. I also use a paid tool which I highly recommend it is called Micro Niche Finder. It has a one time fee and you get continuous free upgrade for life. I will be doing separate article on this tool in the future, so stay tuned. If you are newbie then the Google Keyword Tool is the way to go, as it gives you a great understanding of keyword research.
