It does not matter what type of site you are building. It could be a blog, or an HTML site. The important thing is you need to be thinking about traffic to your site. Traffic is the life blood of any marketing enterprise whether it is an on line venture or a bricks and mortar store. All traffic is not created equal. Many web surfers are searching for information only and will not be in a buying mood. Others may be searching for product reviews because they have decided to make a purchase and are looking for information that will help them make a final decision. This latter surfer is the type of traffic your business success will depend upon.

Just as off line stores spend considerable time, effort and expense to develop attractive window displays to capture the attention of someone passing by, your blog or website needs to capture your visitor's attention and keep them on your site long enough to become interested in the information you provide or to make a purchase or at least to click a paying link such as Google ads as they leave.

Off line stores can depend on passing traffic to a minor degree to attract potential customers. However they must spend considerable amounts of money in the form or various advertising mediums to bring in customers who may not have reason to be in the stores locality. Newspaper, advertising fliers, radio and TV ads are the most popular forms of advertising.

For the web marketer one of the most effective methods of driving traffic to their sites is search engine traffic. This traffic is attracted by the use of "keywords" or "keyword phrases". These "keywords" are what web surfers type into the search engines when they are searching for information or products. Someone searching for cameras might type in camera or digital camera. Or Casio digital camera. When there is more than one word the phrase is referred to as a "longtail keyword"in web jargon. The savvy internet marketer searches out the popular "keywords" that potential customers are using to search for products or information.

The goal is to find those words or phrases that have a high daily search count and a low competition rate and place them in their websites. Competition means the number of other websites that have those keywords in them. A rule of thumb is to find keywords that are receiving around 200 searches a day and have less than 100,000 competing websites. There are many variables to this rule but it is a good general starting point.

Next to keywords, finding a profitable niche is the key factor in building an on line business. Be sure to search for an existing market. You may have a favorite product that you love and are very familiar with. However it may be that the product is not popular or is not selling. In that case you will be undertaking the very difficult task of creating a market. It is much better and always a faster route to bringing in income by finding an existing "hot" market.
