Introduction The Scottish Sporran
Sporran. It's one of those strange words that everyone has heard about but not many people could be defined as positive. Outside of Scotland that is.
In his homeland, as a key component of the national dress of Scotland, the Sporran is revered as much as the haggis or scotch. But What exactly?
A Sporran is a pouch worn hanging in front of the kilt (The word simply means purse or pouch in Gaelic). It hangs from the sturdy leather belt that keeps the skirt in place. As skirts have no pockets, the Sporran was developed for the Scotsman to store their belongings.
Apart from this purely utilitarian use, the Sporran adds a little style too, especially if adorned with motifs or decorated in the colors of the clan.
Originated sporrans as a buckskin bag containing ammunition or daily rations for Highland warrior. Documents dating from the 12th century, describe them with a small bag hung on the front of their bodies. The Sporran genuine, however, did not enter into force until after the kilt was developed in the 16th century.
Through the centuries, became more elaborate sporrans. Leather was replaced with the badger, seal or ermine skins and were equipped with bronze brooches or sometimes silver fantasy designs. Sometimes tassels made of fox or horse hair were added.
The opening of the Sporran, known as the tile was attached to the top with strips of leather. A vestige of this design remains in the modern Sporran in the form of leather tassels and chains.
The modern Sporran is now a highly ornamental accessories used for formal occasions such as weddings and holidays.

What Sporran's future? Today, even in Scotland itself, including the traditional dress Sporran is reserved for weddings, funerals and other special events.
