This article takes a quick look at the keywords that you use on your website - or don't use as the case may be and provides you with another 'quick fix' to increase your search engine traffic.

Better Keywords

It is no secret that your potential customers are out there, searching the internet for your products and services but, are they likely to find your site?

Keyword Research

Finding the right keywords should be the first step of any SEO campaign. If you get this wrong, all the other time, effort and money you put in can (and will) be wasted.

The following is a simple strategy to identify the keywords that are important to you.

1. Brainstorming

Make a list of all the products or services that you provide and

then brainstorm the different ways these are described. Remember

to think like your customer.

2. Expand each term

Once you have your list, you will need to expand each term to find all possible variations. If for instance, you are a plumber and one of your services was central heating you may expand that as follows:

Central Heating

- Central Heating Repair

- Central Heating Installation

Once you have done some basic expansion we can use the Google keywords tool (search Google for it). This tool gives you all the many varieties of keywords that people are searching for and will allow us to easily expand each one of our core terms. A quick search for the terms we have identified above allows me to expand the list as follows:

Central Heating +

- Repair

- Repairs

- Install

- Installer

- Installers

- Installation

- Installation

- Boiler installation

(etc)

3. Divide into pages

Each one of the terms we have identified should have broken down into several variations that may include a range of slang terms, synonyms and plurals.

4. Modifiers - Other Information

There maybe a range of additional words that may bolster all of the existing keywords. For instance, if you only serve the Birmingham & West Midlands areas then this will need to be reflected on the site and in your keywords. Again, you will need to use your judgement here but the golden rule is to think like your prospective customers.

5. Putting it to use

Once you have this list of keywords with each basic term expanded then you need to make sure that this matches up to the pages on your site.

If a page exists for a given term you need to make sure the keyword variations are all used in the text with the most important keywords in the title tags.

If you don't have a page for this keyword then you need to add one with the keyword variations used throughout the copy.

Note:

Remember, write for your users, not the search engines, so aim to sprinkle these keywords in where it makes sense to do so!
