Just the word "research" usually conjures up images of laborious nights analyzing reams of data, doing endless analysis to try to gain some insight out of hundreds or thousands of information sources. In the world of web marketing and SEO, research is essential to success, because everything on the web is data-driven. However, many don't realize that there is a creative element to the process, at least at the start.
Keyword research is usually the first step in a proper SEO campaign, as the goal is to suss out the best keywords for your website or campaign, finding the delicate balance between high traffic and low competition. The web offers dozens of excellent keyword tools, some free and some paid, but the best keyword tool of all is inside your own head. If you are the site owner, no one understands the target better than you do, and no one can get inside their head quite as well. Start with this simple process: picture your ideal target, and draw them as a person. Are they male or female? Are they married, in their 30's, do they work in a particular industry? Go with that line of thinking and describe your target. Then get inside their head... how would they search for what your business offers? From this simple mental exercise, you can come up with a few dozen keywords right off the bat.
After you have used your own mind to come up with your keyword list, you need to do two things: First, you must expand the list to include variations, synonyms, and "long-tail" versions of each of your keywords. This process may result in literally hundreds or even thousands of keywords on your list. Then, after expanding the list, you must narrow them down to a focused list that will be used for specific optimization techniques on your site.
The process of narrowing involves the analysis of your keyword list for relevancy, as well as commercial viability, but this is only the first step. After that, you'll want to narrow based on competitive strength, developing a list of words that is penetrable through the use of SEO tactics. In short, you want to use data to lead you to a list of words that you can actually rank for, using a level of SEO resource that is within your budget. If you mis-manage this careful balance between your available SEO resource and your SEO goals, you may find that you've wasted your time and effort.
